The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken over the investigation into the mysterious death of Twisha Sharma, a case that has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed debate over dowry harassment and women’s safety in India. The move comes after mounting pressure from the victim’s family, women’s rights groups, and opposition leaders demanding an impartial and transparent inquiry.
Twisha Sharma, a 27-year-old software professional, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her matrimonial home earlier this month. Her family has alleged that she was subjected to continuous mental and physical harassment over dowry demands following her marriage last year. The incident quickly gained public attention after disturbing allegations surfaced about repeated demands for cash, jewellery, and a luxury vehicle.
Initially investigated by the local police, the case drew criticism after Twisha’s parents accused authorities of delaying key forensic procedures and failing to question influential members of the husband’s family. Demonstrations were held in several cities, with protesters demanding justice and accusing the local administration of attempting to dilute the seriousness of the allegations.
Following the growing controversy, the state government recommended a CBI investigation, which was later approved by the Union government. Senior CBI officials have now begun collecting evidence, recording witness statements, and reviewing forensic reports prepared during the initial phase of the probe.
According to officials familiar with the investigation, the agency is expected to examine digital communications, bank transactions, and alleged financial exchanges between both families. Investigators are also likely to revisit the crime scene and verify claims made by relatives regarding threats and intimidation faced by Twisha before her death.
Twisha’s parents welcomed the transfer of the case to the CBI, saying they finally hope for “an honest investigation free from political influence.” Her father stated that his daughter had repeatedly informed the family about escalating pressure from her in-laws, but they never imagined the situation would end in tragedy.
Meanwhile, legal experts say the case could become a landmark investigation in the fight against dowry-related crimes if strong evidence is established. Activists have pointed out that despite strict anti-dowry laws, conviction rates in such cases remain low due to lack of evidence, social pressure, and lengthy court proceedings.
Political reactions have also intensified, with opposition parties accusing the state administration of failing to protect women and ensure swift justice. The ruling government, however, defended its actions, stating that recommending a federal probe reflects its commitment to transparency.
The National Commission for Women has reportedly sought regular updates on the case and urged authorities to ensure witness protection during the investigation. Social media campaigns demanding “Justice for Twisha” continue to trend, with thousands expressing anger over recurring cases of alleged dowry abuse across the country.
The CBI is expected to file a detailed status report before the court in the coming weeks as investigators attempt to determine whether Twisha Sharma’s death was a case of suicide, abetment, or a larger criminal conspiracy linked to dowry harassment.
