As intense rainfall affected Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert on Monday afternoon for Mumbai, along with nearby districts such as Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, indicating they would experience “extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds at isolated locations.”
According to the IMD Mumbai Yellow Alert, the Mumbai Monsoon Update for 2025 noted that at 295 mm, the Colaba observatory recorded the highest rainfall in May, surpassing the previous record of 279.4 mm set in May 1918.
Previously, the weather department had elevated its ‘yellow’ alert to ‘orange’ for Mumbai and the districts of Thane and Raigad. This ‘red’ alert is expected to stay in effect until Tuesday morning.
The significant rainfall has resulted in waterlogging and traffic jams in various parts of Mumbai. Areas near the Dadar TT flyover have reported waterlogging that caused traffic disruptions, while the King’s Circle flyover and nearby areas such as Saki Naka in Andheri experienced slow vehicle movement on Monday morning due to the rain. The Mumbai traffic police have reported sluggish traffic at Hindmata Junction, Worli Naka, and Elphinstone Bridge as a consequence of waterlogging.
