Darshan Mehta, the former managing director of Reliance Brands Limited, passed away at 64 on Wednesday, as reported by sources. He is survived by his wife and son.

Mehta’s untimely death concludes a remarkable 40-year career that significantly influenced India’s premium and luxury retail sectors. A trained chartered accountant, he began his career in 1984 after training with PwC and later became CFO at Trikaya Grey Advertising before joining the Lalbhai Group as CFO and CEO of Arvind Brands. He played a key role in introducing international brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica to India in the early 2000s.

Over 17 years at RBL, Mehta transformed the company into a powerhouse, bringing over 90 global brands, including Valentino and Versace, to the Indian market. Recognized for his style and negotiation prowess, he was vital in expanding luxury fashion in India.

In November 2024, he transitioned to a mentorship role within the Reliance Group, continuing to influence young executives and identify new opportunities. Prior to Reliance, he served as president of Arvind Brands Ltd. and helped shape India’s organized apparel retail industry.

Known for his wit, strategic vision, and market insights, Mehta was a luminary in the Indian fashion scene. His legacy is profound, having pioneered luxury fashion in India ahead of its time, and his passing is a significant loss for the country’s high-street fashion community.
