Several areas in Gujarat and Maharashtra are currently experiencing flood-like conditions due to persistent heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted additional rain across various regions of the country, with alerts issued from June 20 to 25 for several northern and central Indian states.
The IMD forecasts significant rainfall from June 20-25 in Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The southwest monsoon is anticipated to reach parts of Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab by June 22.
Heavy rain warnings for these states today
As per the IMD, very heavy rainfall is expected today in Gujarat, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, central Maharashtra, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On June 21, eastern Madhya Pradesh is also predicted to experience heavy showers, along with strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph.
The IMD has issued a monsoon alert for Maharashtra, including an orange alert for the ghat regions of Pune, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A green alert has been issued for the following districts, suggesting light to moderate rain in Mumbai, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur.
A yellow alert has also been issued for Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, indicating the potential for moderate rainfall with localized heavy showers.
Rainfall forecast for northeast and western India
Rainfall activity is expected to continue in Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Maharashtra, and Marathwada from June 20 to 25. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will experience rainfall from June 22 to 24.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated heavy rainfall are anticipated to persist across northeastern states over the next week.
When and where will it rain
Heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Rajasthan from June 20 to 25. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh may receive rain as well.
Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are expected to experience heavy rainfall from June 21 to 25, while Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to see rain from June 20 to 25. Eastern Uttar Pradesh may face significant downpours on June 20 and 21.
Flooding has been reported in several regions
The heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours has led to flooding in parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand. In Pune, the rising water levels have submerged the grounds of a temple. In the Valsad district of Gujarat, a van was carried away by the raging Kharela River near Waghai Dhara due to the persistent rain. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed for rescue and relief efforts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a decrease of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures in Madhya Pradesh over the next five days, with no significant changes expected thereafter. For the rest of the country, no major temperature fluctuations are forecasted.
