Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza on Tuesday ended a fragile ceasefire that had lasted since January, killing at least 254 people.
The strikes, which hit areas including Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah, marked the most intense bombardment since the ceasefire began. Palestinian health officials reported that many casualties were children, as the attacks affected residential neighborhoods housing thousands of displaced individuals.
A White House spokesperson confirmed that Israel consulted the Trump administration before launching the strikes. In a Fox News appearance, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “The Israelis consulted with the Trump administration and the White House regarding their actions in Gaza this evening.”
She added that President Trump warned Hamas and other groups, including the Iran-backed Houthis, of potential consequences for their terrorism.
These strikes followed weeks of failed negotiations between Israel and Hamas over the fate of 59 hostages in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office accused Hamas of “consistently refusing to release our hostages,” despite mediation efforts from Egypt and Qatar, with U.S. support.
