On July 15, US President Donald Trump stated that India is progressing similarly to Indonesia in terms of expanding trade access for the United States, expressing his belief that ‘we’re going to have access to India.’
While speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump commended his recent trade agreement with Indonesia and hinted at a potential similar achievement with India. “Indonesia was great… he’s a great president. We made a terrific deal; he opened up the entire country to trade with the United States,” Trump remarked. “I think something similar will happen with India.”
Trump further mentioned that countries that do not comply could encounter new tariffs, potentially reaching 10 percent, particularly affecting smaller economies. He noted that his administration is actively engaged in five to six significant trade agreements. Although he did not specify all the countries involved, he emphasized that nations unwilling to open their markets might face comprehensive tariffs.
Additionally, he indicated that pharmaceutical tariffs could be introduced by the end of the month, aimed at countries that gain from US drug imports without offering reciprocal market access.
