India Hits Record 229 Billionaires in Forbes 2026 List; PhysicsWallah’s Alakh Pandey Debuts

Published:

India’s billionaire population has reached an all-time high, according to the Forbes 2026 World’s Billionaires List. The country now boasts 229 billionaires, up from 205 last year, cementing its position as the third-largest billionaire hub globally, trailing only the United States and China.

The collective wealth of India’s richest has crossed the $1 trillion mark, fueled by a robust stock market and a wave of successful Initial Public Offerings (IPOs).

The EdTech Milestone: Alakh Pandey Enters the Club

One of the most notable additions to this year’s list is Alakh Pandey, the founder and CEO of the edtech unicorn PhysicsWallah. At 34 years old, the college dropout turned educator has debuted with a net worth of $1 billion.

Pandey’s entry follows the highly successful IPO of PhysicsWallah in November 2025. Starting as a humble YouTube channel in 2016, the platform has grown into a dominant force in test preparation. Pandey is among a handful of self-made entrepreneurs in their 30s to join the global ranks this year.

The Titans at the Top

While new faces are making waves, the pinnacle of the Indian rankings remains occupied by familiar industrial giants. Mukesh Ambani continues his reign as India’s and Asia’s richest person, though he remains just shy of the elusive “centi-billionaire” status.

The 2026 list reflects a “knowledge economy” boom in India, where traditional sectors like steel and infrastructure are now sharing the spotlight with tech-driven education and software services.
