Senior administrative officer Gyanesh Kumar will be the new Chief Election Commissioner of the country. He will succeed Rajiv Kumar, who is currently in the position. The appointment has been announced by the Ministry of Law. Gyanesh Kumar is from the 1988 batch of the Kerala cadre of the IAS.
A panel consisting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has appointed Gyanesh Kumar.
After Rajiv Kumar retires, Gyanesh Kumar will be appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner from a seniority perspective. His term will last until January 26, 2029. The new Chief Election Commissioner will oversee the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, as well as manage elections in Bengal and Tamil Nadu next year.
