G7 Countdown: What’s in Store with PM Modi’s Arrival in Canada?

Published:

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Canada on Monday, June 16, 2025, to participate in the G7 Summit at Kananaskis. This marks his first visit to Canada in ten years, where discussions with global leaders will center on vital international matters, such as energy security, technology, and innovation.

Mr. Modi, currently on a three-nation tour, landed in Canada on Monday evening (local time) from Cyprus, following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Kananaskis meeting, taking place on June 16-17, represents the Prime Minister’s sixth consecutive attendance at the G7 Summit.

“During the Summit, the Prime Minister will engage in discussions with leaders from G-7 nations, other invited outreach countries, and Heads of International Organizations regarding significant global challenges, including energy security, technology, and innovation, with a particular focus on the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related topics,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated earlier.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi is expected to conduct several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit, which comes just over a month after India’s Operation Sindoor targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam attacks on April 22.

Carney’s invitation to Modi for the G7 Summit indicates the new government’s desire to mend relations with New Delhi, which had deteriorated significantly following the assassination of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

In October of the previous year, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats after Ottawa attempted to associate them with the Nijjar case. India also expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats.

India accused Justin Trudeau’s administration of permitting pro-Khalistani factions to operate from Canadian territory.

Carney, an economist and a political newcomer, assumed office as Canada’s new prime minister in March after Trudeau’s departure from the position.

Following Trudeau’s exit, New Delhi expressed its hope to restore relations with Canada based on “mutual trust and sensitivity.” In recent months, security officials from both India and Canada have resumed communication, and both sides are working towards improving their diplomatic ties.
