Five individuals are feared to have lost their lives after falling onto the tracks from a local train traveling from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to the Kasara area of Thane. Officials report that between 10 and 12 passengers are believed to have fallen from the train. This unfortunate event occurred near Mumbra station in the Thane district, according to police reports.
Indian Railways has indicated that overcrowding within the train contributed to passengers falling from a compartment. Reports suggest that some passengers were hanging onto the doors due to the excessive number of people onboard.
Railway officials have arrived at the scene, and the injured individuals have been transported to the nearest hospital for treatment. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently in progress.
In response to this tragedy, the Railways has announced that all new rakes being manufactured for the Mumbai Suburban network will be equipped with automatic door closing mechanisms. Furthermore, existing rakes will be redesigned to include this safety feature.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has confirmed in a statement that there have been fatalities as a result of the incident, although the precise number is still being verified.
“The occurrence of eight passengers falling from the local train between Diva and Mumbra stations, along with the loss of some lives, is deeply regrettable. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. The injured have been promptly admitted to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital for treatment. Local authorities are coordinating the response. I pray for the swift recovery of those injured. The Railway Department has initiated an investigation to determine the underlying causes of this incident,” Mr. Fadnavis stated.
