Grammy-winning rapper Eminem has initiated a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, seeking $109 million for copyright infringement. This legal action, brought forth by Eminem’s music publishing firm, Eight Mile Style, accuses Meta of the “unauthorized storage, reproduction, and exploitation” of 243 of Eminem’s songs across its various platforms.
According to court documents reviewed by People, Eight Mile Style claims that Meta’s in-app features, including “Original Audio” and “Reels Remix,” have actively encouraged users to integrate Eminem’s music into their video content without obtaining the necessary licenses or providing proper attribution. The lawsuit further asserts that this practice has resulted in Eminem’s songs being featured in millions of videos and streamed billions of times, ultimately diminishing the value of the copyrights and causing financial losses for the publisher.
Eminem vs Meta: Unauthorized use of music
As reported by People, the lawsuit contends that Meta has permitted its users to store, reproduce, and exploit Eminem’s songs through features like Original Audio and Reels Remix, which allow users to add music to their content without appropriate attribution or licensing.
Eight Mile Style is pursuing statutory damages of $150,000 for each song, per platform (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), which could lead to a total exceeding $109 million. The publisher has also requested a jury trial and a permanent injunction to stop Meta from any future unauthorized use of Eminem’s music.
