A supervisor from Tata Power’s vigilance department in Bhanjanagar, Ganjam district, attempted suicide on Wednesday on company grounds, allegedly due to harassment and a termination notice from an outsourcing firm.
The supervisor, Bhaktaram Sahu, faced claims of poor performance after four years of service, leading to significant mental distress.
On Tuesday, he was briefly detained by police for allegedly obstructing departmental vehicles but was released without charges. Overwhelmed by mistreatment, Bhaktaram attempted self-immolation at the office on Wednesday but was rescued by colleagues.
He warned the media that he might attempt suicide again if justice isn’t served, and there are claims that the outsourcing firm has threatened other employees who support him.
Despite Tata Power’s role in electricity distribution, Bhanjanagar suffers from frequent outages, and the company has a reputation for arbitrary hiring and firing, prompting ongoing protests outside local offices.
