Comedy or Controversy? Mumbai Police Check in on Kunal Kamra Over Shinde Remarks

Published:

A dispute has emerged over Kunal Kamra’s controversial joke aimed at Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During a recent performance, Kamra referred to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) and alluded to the 2022 political crisis in Maharashtra, where Shinde was instrumental in the fall of Uddhav Thackeray’s government. The show, ‘Naya Bharat,’ recorded in February and posted on Kamra’s YouTube channel on March 23, has drawn significant backlash from Shiv Sena supporters.

On Monday, Mumbai Police visited Kamra’s home as part of their investigation into the joke targeting Shinde. Kamra, known for his satirical style, is facing legal issues due to complaints about his remarks during the performance.

The police have issued summons under CRPC Section 179 to question witnesses regarding Kamra’s comments. YP Singh, a former IPS officer turned lawyer, mentioned that the police could call audience members for statements, but noted that video evidence might render this unnecessary.

In response to the police visit, Kamra commented on his X account, calling it “a waste of time” and criticizing the effort to visit an address where he hasn’t lived for a decade.

Kunal Kamra has been granted interim bail until April 7 after making controversial remarks about Eknath Shinde during a live performance on March 25 and 26. Although he was issued notices to report to the Khar police station, he did not comply. A Khar police official confirmed that no further notices have been sent, and neither Kamra nor his lawyer has reached out to the police. The controversy surrounding him persists.
