A devastating industrial accident at a Vedanta power plant in Singhitarai village has claimed 16 lives, making it one of the deadliest workplace disasters in the state in recent years. The death toll rose on Wednesday after several critically injured workers succumbed to severe burn injuries in hospitals.
Catastrophic Explosion at Boiler Unit
The explosion occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a thermal power facility operated by Vedanta Limited. According to officials, the blast originated in a steel tube carrying high-pressure steam from the boiler to the turbine, triggering a powerful shockwave across the plant.
Initial reports indicated multiple fatalities on the spot, while others suffered extensive burns. Many victims were contract workers present near the boiler unit at the time of the explosion.
Rising Casualties and Injuries
Authorities confirmed that at least four workers died instantly, while several others succumbed shortly after. The toll climbed to 16 as more injured workers died during treatment in hospitals across Raigarh and Raipur.
Over 20 workers have been reported injured, with several still in critical condition. Rescue teams and emergency services rushed to the site immediately after the blast, continuing search operations amid fears that more victims could be trapped.
Government Response and Compensation
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Vedanta has also announced additional financial assistance, including compensation and employment support for affected families, along with covering medical expenses for the injured.
Probe Ordered, Safety Concerns Raised
The state government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident, while a separate magisterial probe is also underway. Officials have been tasked with determining whether the explosion was caused by technical failure, overheating, or human error.
The tragedy has sparked a political row, with opposition leaders demanding strict action and alleging serious lapses in industrial safety standards.
A Grim Reminder of Industrial Risks
Experts say the incident highlights ongoing concerns around workplace safety in India’s rapidly expanding industrial sector. Boiler explosions, often linked to poor maintenance or safety protocol failures, remain a persistent risk in thermal power plants.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on accountability and ensuring stricter safety compliance to prevent such catastrophic incidents in the future.
