On Monday, at least 20 individuals, primarily children, lost their lives and 171 sustained injuries when a training aircraft from the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into a college and school campus in Dhaka.
A physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery informed the media that more than 50 individuals, both children and adults, were admitted to the hospital with burn injuries.
“A third-grade student was pronounced dead upon arrival, and three others, aged 12, 14, and 40, were hospitalized,” said Bidhan Sarker, head of the burn unit at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, as reported by Reuters.
The F-7 BGI aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force collided with the Milestone School and College campus located in the northern Uttara area of Dhaka, according to officials.
The Bangladesh Army’s public relations office confirmed the crash with a brief statement, noting that the F-7 BGI aircraft was part of the Air Force. The statement mentioned one fatality and four injuries but did not provide further details.
As crowds gathered at a distance, several videos captured the aftermath of the incident, showing a large fire near a lawn that was sending a thick plume of smoke into the sky.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the smoke and potential fire by spraying water on the wreckage of the aircraft. The jet had damaged iron grills and left a significant hole in the building’s structure.
