Bloodshed Amidst Beauty: Tragic Shooting Claims Lives of 28 in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir

Published:

A recent terrorist attack in Kashmir resulted in the deaths of at least 28 civilians, primarily tourists, when gunmen opened fire in Baisaran Valley, Anantnag district. SSP Doda Sandeep Mehta announced increased security measures to ensure peace and prevent further violence, urging careful communication to avoid community tensions, stating, ‘The situation remains calm.’ Among the victims was Shubham Dwivedi, a newlywed visiting Kashmir.

The attack occurred around 2:45 PM on Tuesday as families from various states enjoyed the scenic meadows of Baisaran, dubbed ‘mini Switzerland.’ The deceased included two foreign nationals and two locals, with identities pending release. Dilip Desale from Panvel, Maharashtra, was also among the victims. BJP MLA Prashant Thakur condemned the attack, calling for strong denunciation. Eyewitnesses recounted chaos as armed assailants in military-style uniforms opened fire, causing panic and screams as people sought safety.

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, described the attack as a “horrific and deliberate massacre,” acknowledging that the extent of the tragedy is “far greater than any recent incidents targeting civilians.” He noted that the death toll is still being verified and will be officially released later.

On Tuesday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sent teams of officials to Jammu & Kashmir, where some Kannadigas were among the victims of the terror attack.

“Upon learning of the incident, I held an emergency meeting to assess the situation with the Chief Secretary and senior police officials,” Siddaramaiah stated, expressing his strong condemnation of the “atrocious” attack on tourists in Pahalgam.

“I have also communicated with the Resident Commissioner in Delhi. Following my instructions, two teams—one comprising senior officials and another of police personnel—have been dispatched to J&K,” he added.

The Chief Minister mentioned that an adventure team from the Department of Youth Empowerment & Sports, led by Commissioner R Chethan, is also on its way. “We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide all necessary support. Rest assured, the Government is here to help.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed his “deep sorrow” over the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, stating that the government has “promptly” sent a team of police officers to assist in ensuring the safe return of those stranded.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka reached out to Bangalore South BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, who is currently in Kashmir for a Public Accounts Committee meeting, to seek assistance for those stranded. “I have contacted IG, DIG South Kashmir, and DC Anantnag, and I am in regular communication with the LG’s office to provide all necessary support. I will be meeting with the families shortly to offer any help they may need. The Government of India and all agencies involved are doing everything possible to assist those affected by this tragic attack.”.
