Bengal raids targeting pan-Indian LWE outfits: NIA

Published:

Concerning the financing of Maoists or Left Wing Extremist (LWE) organizations based in Chhattisgarh, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been conducting raids at seven locations in West Bengal since this morning.

According to sources, raids are taking place in Asansol in the West Burdwan district and Sodepur and Jagaddal in the North 24 Parganas district. Personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) accompany each team of the raiding NIA officials. According to sources, the NIA detectives are primarily interested in self-described social workers Manabesh Chakraborty, Shipra Chakraborty, and Sudipta Paul.

The investigating officials suspect these individuals of being “Urban Naxalites” who are involved in funding the LWE organizations. Investigating officials are also keeping an eye on Avigyan Sarkar, an alumnus and self-described research scholar.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently stated that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to eliminate Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) from the nation by March 2026. He highlighted the importance of intensifying efforts in the fight against LWE and stressed the need to operate with double the speed and determination that characterized the initial phases of the campaign against Naxalism, to fully eradicate this issue from the country.
