A New Chapter: Congress Steps Forward, While BJP Holds the Past

Published:

Congress Headquarters

The newly established Congress headquarters is situated on Kotla Marg, in proximity to the BJP office. Nearly seven years after relocating to its current premises on Deendayal Upadhyay Marg in Delhi in February 2018, the BJP continues to occupy the residence at 11 Ashoka Road, which was previously designated to them.

As the Congress prepares to inaugurate its new office on January 15, there is conjecture that the party may retain its existing office space at 24 Akbar Road, emulating the BJP’s strategy. Government officials have suggested that this could violate the Centre’s regulations concerning the allocation of office space to national political parties.

What do the regulations stipulate?

According to a policy issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on July 13, 2006, the government has decided to allocate land to recognized political parties for the establishment of office facilities in Delhi, subject to availability.

This policy permits the allocation of land to all national parties recognized by the Election Commission and state parties that possess a minimum of seven Members of Parliament across both Houses.
