On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the esteemed Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the highest civilian award in Ghana for foreign dignitaries. This accolade was bestowed upon him by President John Dramani Mahama at a state banquet held at Jubilee House, coinciding with the beginning of Modi’s two-day official visit to the nation.
The award was presented to the Prime Minister in acknowledgment of his “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership,” as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Expressing gratitude to the people and government of Ghana for this special honor, the Prime Minister remarked that the “shared democratic values and traditions of the two nations will continue to foster the partnership.” He emphasized that the award “further strengthens the friendship between the two countries and imposes a new obligation on him to promote and enhance bilateral relations.”
In addition to Modi, notable figures who have received the ‘Order of the Star of Ghana’ include Queen Elizabeth II as the Queen of the UK, Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, and Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General, along with King Charles III as the Prince of Wales in 2018, King Mohammed VI of Morocco, and Giorgio Napolitano, the former president of Italy.
Modi expressed his belief that his “historic” State visit to Ghana would bring renewed energy to India-Ghana relations, according to the MEA. “A reflection of the deep and enduring ties between India and Ghana,” stated MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
Earlier, Modi engaged in extensive discussions with Mahama, following which India and Ghana upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive partnership. The Prime Minister is currently in Ghana as part of the first leg of his five-nation tour, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in thirty years.
