Job Cuts at Zomato: Deepinder Goyal’s Sudden Layoff Blitz Hits 600!

Published:

Zomato, led by Deepinder Goyal, has reportedly laid off 600 customer support associates just a year after hiring them, as reported by Moneycontrol.

These layoffs come amid stagnant growth in the food delivery sector and increasing losses at Blinkit, its quick-commerce division. In response, Zomato is accelerating its shift to automation, leveraging AI to handle more customer service tasks to cut costs and improve efficiency.

Last year, the company hired around 1,500 employees through its Zomato Associate Accelerator Program (ZAAP), designed to provide entry-level customer support roles with pathways to advancement in various areas. However, most of these contract workers were not offered renewals at the end of their contracts.

Affected employees were reportedly terminated without notice and received one month’s salary as severance. Zomato cited performance-related issues, including low punctuality, as the reason for the dismissals.

Former employees have voiced concerns about the lack of notice. On Reddit, several individuals claiming to be ex-Zomato employees expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as abrupt and unfair terminations. One user, a former customer support associate, stated he was let go without warning for being late by an average of 28 minutes over three months, despite meeting performance standards and having a strong presence at work. He noted there was no feedback or warning before his termination.
