India is experiencing a surge in Swine Flu cases, with over 20,000 infections and at least 347 deaths reported as of December 2024. Delhi has recorded 3,141 cases, while Kerala has 2,846, Tamil Nadu 1,777, Maharashtra 2,027, Gujarat 1,711, and Rajasthan 1,149.
Data is sourced from state reports to the Central Surveillance Unit of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme at the NCDC in Delhi. The main circulating influenza subtypes are A (H1N1) and H3N2.
Influenza typically peaks seasonally in India from January to March and August to October, influenced by weather and human activities. Maharashtra has the highest death toll at 71, followed by Kerala (61), Gujarat (55), Chhattisgarh (43), Punjab (48), and Haryana (26).
The WHO estimates around one billion seasonal influenza cases globally each year, resulting in 3 to 5 million severe illnesses and 290,000 to 650,000 respiratory deaths.
