On October 3rd, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Atal Tunnel, a major engineering feat named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This strategically important tunnel, located in the heart of the Himalayas, is a game-changer for the people of the Lahaul and Spiti regions, providing year-round connectivity between Manali and Leh. The Atal Tunnel is the world’s longest high-altitude tunnel, stretching 9.02 kilometers (5.6 miles) through the Pir Panjal Range at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,842 feet).

How to Reach Atal Tunnel:

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar, approximately 50 kilometers from Manali, which is well-connected to major cities in India.
  • By Road: Manali is the starting point to access the Atal Tunnel. From Manali, the drive to the tunnel takes about 45 minutes. Lahaul and Spiti, connected by the tunnel, can be accessed via this route.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar, located about 165 kilometers from Manali.
