SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has stepped down, exacerbating the ongoing crisis within the Akali Dal party.

Published:

In light of the current crisis and the escalating tensions involving the leadership of the Akal Takht, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC), and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Harjinder Singh Dhami announced his resignation as SGPC president on Monday.

Dhami expressed that his resignation serves as a gesture of respect towards Giani Raghbir Singh, the Jathedar of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Additionally, he has withdrawn from the seven-member committee established by the Akal Takht Jathedar on December 2, 2024, aimed at reorganizing the SAD.

Dhami found himself in a challenging position, as Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh had publicly opposed the dismissal of Giani Harpreet Singh from his role as Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, while SAD acting president Balwinder Singh Bhundar did not attend the committee meeting that Dhami was leading.
