Earlier Thursday, the American Airlines regional passenger plane carrying 64 passengers crashed into the Potomac River close to Reagan Washington National Airport after colliding with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. President Donald Trump stated that he had been briefed on the “horrible accident” and was watching the situation shortly after the mid-air collision on Wednesday night.

The passenger jet was approaching Runway 33 at the airport when the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet struck a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter at approximately 9 p.m. ET, according to the FAA. There were four crew members and sixty passengers on the flight. According to both an Army and a defense official, the helicopter was an Army Black Hawk.
