Tragedy Amidst Devotion: Maha Kumbh Stampede 2025

Published:

It was a day filled with panic and pain for 75 million visitors at Maha Kumbh 2025. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of 2.5 lakh for the victims, and a probe has been ordered.

A large number of pilgrims gathered for a holy dip during the Mauni Amavasya celebration at Triveni Sangam. Between 1 am and 2 am, chaos erupted when some devotees tried to climb over barricades, leading to a stampede after a barrier collapsed.

This incident occurred as millions participated in the sacred bathing ritual, a highlight of the Maha Kumbh Mela. This year, the significance is heightened by the rare ‘Triveni Yog,’ occurring for the first time in 144 years, with an expected attendance of around 10 crore pilgrims.
