Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season, and he has expressed his determination to fully commit to leading the team as they aim for their first championship title.
The franchise secured Pant’s services for a record ₹27 crore during last year’s mega auction. In a press conference held in Kolkata, alongside principal team owner Sanjiv Goenka and mentor Zaheer Khan, Pant stated, “I am grateful to the LSG family for their trust in me. I will dedicate myself completely to this role and strive to honor the confidence you have placed in me. I am excited about this new chapter and look forward to bringing fresh energy to the team while enjoying the game.”
Pant becomes the fourth captain in LSG’s IPL history, following KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, and Krunal Pandya. He succeeds Rahul, who led the team since 2022 but has since joined Delhi Capitals (DC) after the auction. This marks Pant’s second stint as captain in the IPL, having previously led DC. From 2021 to 2024, Pant captained DC, except for the 2023 season, which he missed due to recovery from serious injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022.
Before the IPL 2025 retention deadline, he was released by DC, with the leadership transition being a significant factor in the conclusion of his nine-year tenure with the franchise on October 31. During the announcement of Pant’s captaincy on Star Sports, Goenka expressed confidence in Pant’s potential to become one of the most successful captains in IPL history, alongside legends like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. He remarked, “I believe that time will show he is not just the most expensive player in the IPL but also the best. His passion and energy are unmatched, and his leadership style is refreshingly approachable.” “I see a natural leader in Rishabh Pant, and I am confident he will excel in this role.”
