Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday outlined an ambitious economic and strategic roadmap during high-level talks in Rome, marking a significant expansion of ties between the two nations under what both leaders described as a “Special Strategic Partnership.”
The Rome summit focused on boosting trade, investment, defence cooperation, artificial intelligence, clean energy, maritime connectivity and the ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which is emerging as a major geopolitical and economic initiative linking Asia with Europe.
In a joint vision statement and coordinated diplomatic outreach, the two leaders emphasized the growing importance of the “Indo-Mediterranean” region, presenting India and Italy as natural partners in shaping future trade routes, technology cooperation and supply-chain resilience.
The bilateral talks were held at Villa Doria Pamphili, where Modi and Meloni reviewed progress made under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029 and agreed to accelerate implementation across several sectors.
According to officials, the roadmap aims to increase bilateral trade beyond the current levels and push it toward the €20 billion target by 2029. Both governments are also encouraging stronger industrial collaboration in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, green mobility, defence production and critical technologies.
A major focus of the discussions was the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, widely viewed as a strategic alternative trade and connectivity network connecting India with Europe through the Gulf region and Mediterranean ports. Italy is expected to play a central European role in the corridor through its ports and logistics infrastructure.
The leaders also discussed cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, space technology and innovation ecosystems. Italian and Indian firms are expected to collaborate more closely through joint ventures and technology-sharing agreements under the new roadmap.
Defence and security cooperation featured prominently during the meeting, with both sides agreeing to deepen maritime security coordination and counter-terrorism collaboration amid growing geopolitical uncertainty in Europe, the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East.
PM Modi’s visit comes at a time when India is rapidly strengthening ties with European nations following the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement framework. Italian support is seen as crucial for enhancing India’s economic engagement with Europe.
The chemistry between Modi and Meloni once again drew attention on social media, with another “Melodi” moment emerging after the Italian Prime Minister welcomed Modi warmly in Rome. Their public camaraderie has increasingly become symbolic of the improved bilateral relationship between the two democracies.
Apart from his talks with Meloni, PM Modi is also scheduled to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and senior business leaders during the visit. He is additionally expected to engage with the Food and Agriculture Organization headquarters in Rome to discuss food security and sustainable agriculture cooperation.
Diplomatic observers believe the Rome summit signals India’s intent to strengthen strategic partnerships in Europe beyond traditional trade relations, while Italy is positioning itself as one of New Delhi’s most important gateways into the European market and Mediterranean region.
