India and Sweden have officially upgraded their bilateral relationship to a “Strategic Partnership,” marking a major diplomatic milestone aimed at deepening cooperation in defence, trade, emerging technologies, sustainability, and innovation. The announcement came after high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg during Modi’s ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour of Europe.
The two leaders endorsed a new Joint Action Plan for 2026–2030, which lays out an ambitious roadmap for collaboration across four key pillars — strategic security dialogue, next-generation economic partnership, emerging technologies and digital connectivity, and cooperation on sustainability and resilience.
According to the joint statement released after the summit, both nations agreed to intensify political and defence consultations, including closer coordination between national security advisers. The partnership also seeks to strengthen supply chain security and increase bilateral trade and investment significantly over the next five years.
Prime Minister Modi described the relationship as one built on “shared democratic values, innovation, and human-centric development.” He invited Swedish companies to expand manufacturing and technology investments in India under the “Make in India” initiative while highlighting India’s rapid digital and industrial growth.
Sweden, known globally for its strengths in green technology, advanced manufacturing, telecommunications, and clean energy, is expected to play a larger role in India’s transition toward sustainable industrial growth. Both sides also announced stronger collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and the proposed Sweden–India Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor (SITAC).
The discussions also covered defence cooperation and regional security concerns. India thanked Sweden for its support following recent terror incidents, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to combating terrorism in all forms. Defence industrial cooperation, including long-term manufacturing partnerships, was highlighted as a growing area of mutual interest.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also joined parts of the discussions, reflecting the broader push to deepen India-Europe strategic and economic engagement. The India-Sweden upgrade comes amid accelerating India-European Union cooperation on trade, defence, and mobility agreements.
The visit additionally carried cultural symbolism. Modi and Kristersson exchanged commemorative gifts honouring the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, underlining the historic and cultural ties that have connected India and Sweden for decades.
Analysts view the new strategic partnership as part of India’s broader multi-alignment foreign policy approach, where New Delhi is expanding ties with key European nations to strengthen economic resilience, technological advancement, and geopolitical cooperation in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
