Ladakh, Sept 25 – Authorities have imposed a strict curfew in several parts of Ladakh after large-scale protests demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule spiraled into violence on Wednesday.
Protesters, led by local organizations and student groups, had been staging demonstrations for weeks over the region’s demand for full-fledged statehood and protection of land and job rights. The movement intensified after talks with the Centre reportedly failed to yield any progress.
According to officials, the initially peaceful protests took a violent turn when some groups clashed with security forces, resulting in stone-pelting incidents, injuries, and damage to public property. Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowds, while several protest leaders were taken into custody.
The Union Territory administration announced a curfew in Leh and Kargil districts, suspended mobile internet services, and deployed additional paramilitary forces to prevent further escalation.
Local leaders have accused the government of ignoring Ladakh’s aspirations since its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, when the region was carved into a Union Territory without a legislative assembly.
“We have been demanding statehood and constitutional protections to safeguard our identity and resources. The government cannot silence our voice with curfews,” said a representative of the Leh Apex Body.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs urged calm, assuring that it is open to dialogue with stakeholders.
The situation remains tense but under control, with security forces maintaining a heavy presence across the region.
