In a landmark development, Mizoram is set to experience train travel for the very first time, marking the end of a 172-year wait since India’s first passenger train ran in 1853.
The northeastern state, known for its lush hills, bamboo forests, and vibrant cultural heritage, will now join the Indian railway map, unlocking new opportunities for connectivity, trade, and tourism.
The First Tracks in Mizoram
The ambitious railway project has extended tracks into Mizoram through the Bairabi–Sairang line, a 51.38-km route that winds through steep terrain, deep gorges, and breathtaking landscapes.
The engineering marvel includes 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 5 tunnels, making it one of the most challenging railway projects undertaken in the Northeast.
Sairang, located just 20 kilometers from state capital Aizawl, will serve as Mizoram’s first railway station, finally bridging the gap between the hill state and India’s extensive rail network.
A Lifeline for Mizoram
For decades, Mizoram has depended primarily on roadways and air travel for connectivity, both of which come with high costs and limited capacity. The arrival of the railways is expected to be a game-changer for trade, agriculture, and tourism.
