The death toll from the explosion at a pharmaceutical facility in the district on Monday has tragically increased to 14, as confirmed by Telangana Health Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha.
A minimum of 34 individuals sustained injuries from the blast, which is believed to have been caused by a suspected chemical reaction.
“We have confirmed that 14 people have lost their lives, and 34 others are currently undergoing treatment. We remain optimistic that there will not be additional fatalities,” the minister shared with reporters.
Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy, who visited the site, remarked, “Eight fatalities occurred this morning, and now four additional bodies have been discovered.”
The explosion took place at a reactor within the Sigachi Pharma plant located in the Pashamylaram industrial estate, where a fire ensued following the suspected chemical reaction.
Inspector General of Police (Multizone) V Satyanarayana mentioned that plant personnel estimated approximately 150 individuals were present at the time of the explosion, with 90 of them situated in the impacted area.
The blast reportedly occurred between 9:28 am and 9:35 am.
The management of the plant quickly informed local law enforcement, who subsequently notified the fire department. About ten fire engines were dispatched, and teams from both the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) participated in the rescue efforts. The fire was eventually contained.
Authorities are still working to verify the precise number of workers on-site, as the individual responsible for maintaining attendance records is thought to have perished in the event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sorrow over this disaster and offered his condolences to the grieving families. In a statement on X, he declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed deep concern regarding the incident and instructed officials to prioritize rescue operations and ensure that those injured receive advanced medical treatment, as reported in an official release.
