So far, nearly 517 Indian nationals have returned to India from Iran as part of Operation Sindhu, according to Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), who made the announcement on Saturday.
A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, arrived in Delhi during the early hours of June 21, facilitating the return of Indian nationals from Iran under Operation Sindhu.
This ongoing evacuation initiative was initiated by the Indian government in response to escalating security concerns stemming from the conflict between Iran and Israel.
Jaiswal confirmed the latest arrival via a post on X, stating, “Operation Sindhu continues. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi at 0300 hrs on 21st June, bringing Indians from Iran home. With this, so far 517 Indian nationals from Iran have returned home under Operation Sindhu.”
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has been actively coordinating the movement of citizens on the ground, while the MEA supervises their return to India. A new group of evacuees, which includes students and religious travelers, arrived in Delhi on Saturday, as Iran has made a rare exception for New Delhi to evacuate 1,000 Indians despite its airspace closure.
India’s Operation Sindhu has successfully repatriated over 500 citizens from the conflict-affected region of Iran. As the situation on the ground becomes increasingly unstable, the government has intensified its efforts to ensure the safety of its nationals through organized evacuation flights and cross-border movements.
Among those who returned was Zaffar Abbas Naqvi, who recounted how the situation deteriorated rapidly. “Everything was going well, but one day we learned that Iran had been attacked. We remained indoors for a while. Then we moved to Mashhad, but soon Mashhad was also attacked. We reached out to the Indian government. The response was so prompt that we cannot express our gratitude adequately. I want to thank Modi ji and Yogi ji for making all the arrangements for us,” Naqvi stated, as reported by ANI.
Kulsum, another Indian national who returned safely, remarked on the tense situation in Iran. “The situation was tense in Iran.
