The United States dismissed India’s WTO notification regarding retaliatory tariffs in response to high metal duties, leading India to contemplate the suspension of concessions on imports from America.
During discussions about a trade agreement between India and the US, the United States informed the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Friday that India’s proposal to suspend concessions as retaliation against American tariffs on steel and aluminum is unfounded.
Washington’s communication to the WTO stated, “The US will not engage in discussions about Section 232 tariffs under the Agreement on Safeguards, as we do not consider these tariffs to be a safeguard measure.”
Section 232 provides the US President with the power to manage imports that may threaten US national security. The US reiterated, “Consequently, these actions are not classified as safeguard measures.”
Last week, India proposed the implementation of retaliatory tariffs on 29 products from the US, which include apples, almonds, pears, anti-freezing preparations, boric acid, and certain iron and steel items, under the WTO framework to address the American duties on steel and aluminum that were enacted as safeguard measures.
